Luodai Hakka's Old Town
Luodai Hakkas' Old Town is located in the eastern suburb of Chengdu , about 25km away from downtown Chengdu .
Luodai Hakkas' Old Town is famous for the Hakkas's unique architecture , dialect , food , clothing and customs of the migrant people from the provinces of Canton , Guangxi , jiangxi and Hubei . The Hakkas are a branch of the Han Chinese nationality , coming from North and Central China, The Hakka people first migrated to Canton and East China's Fujian Province , so the name , Hakka , means "guests." Today, Hakka communities are also scattered all over Southeast Asia.
In the early years of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), because of wars , there was a bad shortage of labor in Sichuan province . In order to restore this land of abundance , Qing government made lots of people migrate to Sichuan province , such as Jiangxi , Hunan , Hubei and Canton . Luodai Old Town became one of the important settlements for the migrant people.
Today , in Luodai Hakkas' Old Town , more than 20,000 of its 23,000 residents are descendants of the Hakkas. As a result, Luodai Old Town is characterized by a strong ambience of Hakka culture .
In Luodai Old Town , the street is lined with teahouses , restaurants , grocery stores and liquor shops with big vats of newly brewed firewater .
Luodai is also bustling with life , farmers selling fresh vegetables and fruit by the road. In teahouses , people of different ages enjoy tea , play mah-jong and cards . Food stands attract customers with various food from smoked ducks to spicy noodle in restaurant windows . Richshaws and one-wheel rooster cart , carrying visitors around the street , remind us of our old days .
In addtion to these , Luodai Hakkas' Old Town is also famous for its guildhalls .
Guildhall is a complex of buildings with lofty walls and curved gables.
Exquisite and vivid woodcut decorations and brick carvings can be found on gables, wooden beams, rafters and columns.
On a wall is the written introduction to the guildhall. Originally built by Hakkas , Guildhall used to be a gathering place for Hakkas from that province to meet friends, settle disputes and pay sacrifices to their ancestors and gods.
In Luodai Hakkas' Old Town , traditional water-splashing festival is held every July. During the festival, local people perform dragon and lion dances on the old street, while spectators splash them with water.
