Chengdu Panda Breeding Center

Built in 1987 , Chengdu Panda Breeding Center is located in the northeastern suburb of Chengdu ,covering an area of 75 acres .Up to now (2008) , there are about 60 pandas , including adult pandas , juveniles and cubs .Meanwhile , there are also some red pandas in this panda center .

Awarded "Global 500" twice by UN in the year of 1989 and 1994 , Chengdu Panda Breeding Center is one of the most important and successful institutes engaged in conservation of giant pandas. During the 70s and 80s of the 20th century, Chengdu Panda Breeding Center , the former Chengdu Zoo , participated in the salvation of giant pandas in the wild. Based on the 6 wild giant pandas from nearby Qingcheng Mountain, there are now altogether 50 pregnancies with 77 cubs, of which 49 survived by scientific breeding in Chengdu Panda Breeding center .

In 1997, Chengdu Laboratory of Reproduction and Genetics for Endangered Wildlife was set up and equipped with advanced technical equipment, mainly sponsored by Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Foundation and the State Planning and Development Committee.

News : From July to November 10 in 2009 , 5 panda babies have been born in Chengdu Panda Breeding Center .
